Third Annual Conference on
Terrorism and Global Security
May 8 - 9, 2008

The 2008 Conference on Terrorism and Global Security brings together legal scholars, intelligence personnel, public health professionals with national and international terrorism experts.  Sponsored jointly by the Los Angeles Terrorism Early Warning Group (LA-TEW) and The RAND Corporation, the conference will take place on May 8-9, 2008, at RAND Headquarters in Santa Monica, CA.  The conference program will include plenary sessions, keynote speakers, as well as breakout sessions on key topics.  Invited guest speakers include public officials, leading legal authorities, public health experts and other counter-terrorism experts from the U.S. and abroad.  For attorneys, the Conference has been certified by the State Bar of California for CLE credit.

2008 Conference Topics

The 2008 Conference, including keynote talks, panels and breakout sessions will focus on critical areas including:

Legal issues in counter-terrorism: Critical areas including issues of detention, rendition, torture, coercive interrogation, privacy, rights, the right to trial, Executive oversight, and prosecution of terrorism researchers.

Domestic intelligence needs and strategies: Current concerns over the need for domestic intelligence in the U.S. and what is required in terms of legislation, organization and other resources.

Public health responses to catastrophic events: How can the public health system respond to low probability, high consequence events such as a bio-terrorist attack or other major disaster?

Evolving Muslim populations in the U.S. and Europe: Included here are evolving terrorist threats from growing domestic Muslim populations as well as large-scale illegal immigration.

Terrorist Funding and Operations: How are terrorist operations financed and what steps are being taken to interdict both the funding of terrorists as well as travel of terrorist operatives.

Protection of corporate infrastructure: Multinational corporations are increasingly vulnerable to attack, and need to protect their facilities and workforce against rising threats.
